‘I know why’: Madge laments ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ Broncos… but believes he has answers

Broncos coach Michael Maguire has called his star-studded side “Jekyll and Hyde” following their fifth loss in six games on Sunday.

Brisbane have one of the best rosters in the NRL and there were huge expectations for 2025 after the club appointed premiership-winner Maguire.

But after a strong start to the season, it’s been a disastrous period for the club in the lead up to the Origin period.

Broncos No. 6 Ezra Mam was a standout in his first game of the season but once again Maguire’s side failed to deliver in the big moments during the 30-26 loss at home.

“Obviously frustrating and we’re hurting but we have to stay in the process and the path the boys are on,” Maguire said.

“We’re a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team at the moment. We show such great stuff and then we go the other way. When we find that consistency and what we’re capable of doing, we know what they can do.

“But we need to have a really good look at our second half starts and stuff like that are things we’re obviously looking at. We need to be better.

“I know why (we’re losing) but I’ll keep that to myself and the team. They’re things that we need to show and at this present moment we’re not.

“The boys get a break now, we’ve been going flat out for 10 weeks and had some really good moments but we’ve also had moments like that (tonight). Building consistency around what we’re doing is what we’ll chase over the next couple of weeks.

“No one is (happy). We defended well in the first half but it’s about being able to do that consistently. I thought Ez came in and did a great job for us, he was a bit of a shining light in something that was disappointing.

“Something I do know about the competition is there is a long way to go. We’ve got a break now and will have a good look at where we’re at and go from there.”

Maguire denied the sacking of Marty Taupau this week after he liked a post on social media that sledged the coach had anything to do with the result.

“There’s plenty of those things going on around the environment. It’s being able to handle those things,” Maguire said.

“We had a job to do… we had a chance to win it at the back end so it shows where the team can be.

“We can all be better.”

Brisbane skipper Adam Reynolds echoed the sentiment of his coach and said they needed to stop inviting teams back into the contest.

“We’re good in patches, poor in patches, it’s just about trying to find that consistency,” Reynolds said.

“It’s concentration. We’re just not getting it right at the moment. There are little errors in our game and we’re just not good enough at sticking to the game plan.

“We’re coming up with poor errors and ill-discipline and when you do that you invite teams into it.

“We need to be better.”
