‘Can’t win the comp like this’: Big Galvin position twist with halves switch to fix contenders’ flaw

The Bulldogs are “tempted” to parachute new recruit Lachlan Galvin into the halfback position, replacing Toby Sexton.

That’s according to The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield, who revealed the club are concerned over their attack.

Galvin was left out of the Bulldogs’ side against the Cowboys on Saturday night, with Sexton playing at halfback.

But the Bulldogs managed to score just two tries in their 12-8 victory, despite the Cowboys having the worst defensive record of any NRL team in 2025.

By comparison, the Storm have scored 517 points this season, the Raiders have scored 462, with the Bulldogs scoring just 366 points in 2025.

The Dolphins (490), Roosters (403), Sharks (390), Sea Eagles (380) have all scored more points than the Bulldogs this season.

Rothfield believes the Bulldogs’ poor attacking record, when compared with other contenders, this season may lead to Galvin’s recall into the team, this time to start at halfback, at the expense of Sexton.

“I’m now told that there were huge concerns about the Bulldogs’ attack, not just in recent weeks, but since the beginning of the season,” Rothfield said on NRL 360.

“There’s a worry about their attack.

“I’m hearing that they’re tempted now to put Galvin in, start him at halfback, stop the debate, stop the speculation, get some cohesion.”

Host Braith Anasta said he believes the Bulldogs can’t win the competition in 2025, if they attack like they did against the Cowboys.

“Watching the game on the weekend, I thought, this team, the way they’re attacking, can’t win the comp,” Anasta said.

“It was really an eye opener to me. I was hoping they would improve, going back to the team they did have.

“But they didn’t.

“Their defence has been amazing, and won them this game.

“What really concerned me was, they were playing the team that’s got the worst defence in the competition, and they only scored the points that they did.”

Of the halfbacks in the teams currently sitting in the top four, Sexton has the least try assists (7) and line breaks (0) this season.

Co-host Gorden Tallis believes the Bulldogs need to make a call and stick to it.

“If they go with Galvin, go with Galvin, but pick him at seven or pick him at six, and just run with it. Don’t try to keep the whole squad happy. Make the decision,” Tallis added.
