Reason behind Smith’s police questioning revealed as NRL make statement

The reason behind Brandon Smith’s chat with police in the Gold Coast airport last weekend has been revealed.

According to Code Sports, as part of a drugs investigation, Queensland Police questioned Smith about a person known to him.

There’s no suggestion that Smith has committed any wrongdoing, which has been confirmed by the NRL.

“The NRL has no information relating to a potential breach of the NRL Rules by the player,” an NRL spokesman told Code Sports.

Smith was flying in from Sydney with the Rabbitohs ahead of their match with the Titans, being stopped by police after disembarking the flight.

After questioning, he was allowed to go and able to join his teammates at a Broadbeach hotel

“Souths were filing off the plane heading to luggage and Queensland police took Smith aside and spoke to him for a considerable amount of time,” veteran journalist Phil Rothfield said on the Big Sports Breakfast radio show.

“They have been trying to track Brandon for sometime. When they couldn’t get hold of him, they said they saw he was coming to the Gold Coast and they wanted to chat to him.”

Smith played against the Titans last Sunday and has been named to play Parramatta this weekend.
