$1m NRL bidding war set to erupt after Broncos star’s big reveal — Transfer Whispers

Broncos superstar Selwyn Cobbo has reportedly began negotiating with rival NRL clubs with a $1 million battle to recruit the superstar outside back looming.

The 22-year-old is without a contract for the 2026 season and he has played arguably the best football of his career under Michael Maguire this season at fullback.

FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer.

Veteran rugby league reporter Pete Badel revealed on Friday Cobbo is set to hit the open market, with his agent revealing he is “open to leaving the Broncos”.

Cobbo’s decision comes amid a squeeze at the Broncos, with Adam Reynolds’ desire to continue to play on in 2026 putting pressure on the club’s salary cap.

Kotoni Staggs and Kobe Hetherington also due new contracts, while Reece Walsh and Pat Carrigan have already signed monster deals.

Payne Haas is also set to re-sign on a deal worth upwards of $1 million.

Cobbo’s current contract sits at a reported $650,000, which could soar towards the seven-figure mark if his form continues.

The young gun could also be a prime target for the 18th and 19th NRL franchises: the Perth Bears and Papua New Guinea.

However, it remains to be seen if he will sign a long-term deal that will rule him out of joining those outfits in 2027 or 2028.

“Ideally, you’d love to hang on to him. But the Broncos have so many good players, you can’t really fit them all in under the cap,” former Broncos coach Kevin Walters told foxsports.com.au.

“If Selwyn stays, that means someone else has to move on or a couple of players will have to move on. That’s the decision the Broncos will have to make.

“Most clubs would love a player like Selwyn Cobbo on their roster, so there will be plenty of clubs chasing him.”
